ADIMDE NEWS 25 WÄRTSILÄ TO EQUIP TWO ZERO- EMISSIONS BATTERY- POWERED FERRIES Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract to design and equip two new zero-emissions fe- rries that will be built for the Norwegian operator Boreal Sjö at Holland Shipyards in the Netherlands. In addition to the design, Wärtsilä will supply the thruster motors, batteries, onboard and shore-based battery charging equipment, the back-up generators and different electrical systems for each ferry. The equip- ment is scheduled for deli- very at the shipyard in early 2021 and the ships are expec- ted to commence operations in autumn 2021. René Zuidam, Account Ma- nager, Newbuild Sales, Wärt- silä Marine, explained that “this project is an excellent example of Wärtsilä’s exten- sive capabilities in delivering optimal design and integra- ted equipment solutions. The- se battery-powered ferries represent the future in envi- ronmental sustainability, and their design is the result of the years of R&D that Wärtsilä has invested in smart marine solutions to lower the carbon footprint of shipping”. In turn, Marco Hoogen- doorn, Director of Holland Shipyards explained that “both Wärtsilä and Holland Shipyards Group have ex- tensive experience in the electrification of vessels and a shared vision to provide sustainable solutions to the transport sector. The combi- ned expertise of both orga- nizations forms an excellent base for a valuable and suc- cessful cooperation”. The two ferry designs are not identical. One is for a 30-metre long vessel capa- ble of carrying 10 cars and approximately 100 passen- gers, while the other is for a 50-metre long vessel for 35 cars and 149 passengers, including crew. The ferries will serve the Launes – Kve- llandstrand – Launes, and Abelnes – Andabeløy – Abel- nes routes in Norway.
